It has been said by many in the National Football League media that Jason Garrett's job is in trouble. He is, after all, not under contract after the 2019 season, but that is all I have heard of Garrett's job being in jeopardy. So let's dive into whether or not Garrett's job really is in jeopardy or not.
Let's look at why it isn't first. Jason Garrett currently has this year's version of the Dallas Cowboys sitting in first place in the NFC's East division, with a record above .500, and look primed to hold that position all the way through the season. Jason Garrett has taken the Cowboys to the playoffs in three seasons during his tenure, all three times reaching the divisional round. Garrett has also gone .500 or better in all but one of his season at head coach of the Cowboys. Jason Garrett has been one of the most consistent coaches in terms of tenure with a team. During his tenure in Dallas, the other teams in the NFC East have had 11 different head coaches combined (just under 4 per team). Garratt has been able to provide stability in Dallas at the head coaching position. All these points are very general, and that's for good reason. The reason being is that I think that Jason Garrett should be fired.
Jason Garrett has only been to the playoffs 3 times with the Dallas Cowboys as their head coach, his record is 2-3, beating the Lions (2014) and the Seahawks (2018), but losing to the Packers (2014, 2016) and the Rams (2018). Of those teams they lost to, only one went on to the Super Bowl, and that was the offensive powerhouse Rams who lost the game 13-3 to the New England Patriots. That's not a great Postseason record. Garrett has not been able to move past the divisional round when he gets to the postseason, that's three wins away from a Super Bowl victory. To be successful in the playoffs is to win games. When you can only muster 2 wins in 3 appearances in the postseason (all coming in the wildcard round), that doesn't bode well for a head coach's job security. At best, it will only delay the inevitable, just ask Marvin Lewis about that. Garrett also doesn't have the best regular season record. He is +19, but a .566 win percentage, which is not that impressive. Garrett is above .500 only four times in his tenure, has three seasons at 8-8, and only 3 postseason appearances in a ten-year tenure. This is a long span to be given the chance to show that one is a capable coach in the NFL. Jason Garrett is a decent, middle-of-the-road head coach in the NFL, but he has shown that he cannot bring a team deep, at least this team deep.
If Jerry Jones wants to bring a title back to Jerry's World, then he needs to move on from Jason Garrett as a head coach. He cannot go deep and will not lead the Boys to a Super Bowl win. So what do the boys need? I'm not well versed in the Dallas Cowboys to diagnose that, but I can say without a doubt, that Jason Garrett is not a Super Bowl head coach.
