Drew's Draft Preview

Writer: Drew HoferDrew Hofer

Updated: May 9, 2020

The National Football League will be holding its annual Collegiate Entry Draft this weekend. With that, Drew will be giving his hot takes on some of the big stories for this year's NFL Entry Draft.

Will Anyone take Number 1 From the Bengals?

The Bengals have been holding on to the number one pick in the 2020 draft for a while and have been making googly eyes at Joe Burrow ever since they locked up the pick, but that has not stopped rumours of the Bengals moving the pick. Now, if you have been living under a rock, you probably have not heard rumours that Joe Burrow may not want to play in Cincinnati, and I can see why. Cincinnati is rebuilding and is not ready to be a contender at this point in time, but Burrow is an Ohio boy, and maybe playing closer to home is what he wants, and maybe this team can build around him and they can challenge the other good teams in the AFC North: Baltimore and Pittsburgh. This may be a tall order for Burrow, but if he can play like he did in college and light teams up, he can be a difference-maker and move from the Bayou Bengals to the Cincinnati Bengals, and that is why no one is going to be able to take this number one away.

How Far Will Tua Fall?

Tua Tagovailoa came into the 2019 as the top prospect for the 2020 NFL Draft, and rightly so. He was the star quarterback at The Alabama, which has been led by college mastermind and NFL-player-making machine Nick Saban, but there have been a few concerns, and rightly so. Tua has had the same surgery on both of his ankles. Tua also broke his hip. Yes, his hip. At 21 years of age, this man broke his hip, that is not a common thing for people his age, and this happened on a mundane play. Tagovailoa has been labelled as fragile, and the evidence does not dispute that fact. Based on this, and the rise of Joe Burrow, where is Tua going to go? There is a huge range, as there are many teams that may be looking to draft a quarterback in the first round this year. Washington is a candidate (but that is a huge wildcard as no one knows what new Head Coach Ron Rivera wants to do at the position with Dwayne Haskins already on the roster). The Dolphins may look for a passer, but they have Josh Rosen on the roster, but who knows what he can do? The Jags may pull the trigger with that if he falls to 9, or do they stick with Minshew? Are the Jets married to Darnold? Are the Bucks wanting someone for Brady to mentor and take over in 2-4 years? Do the Pats see value in him? How long will Brees play in NOLA? Is Justin Herbert a better option? Based on all this, I say Tua will go mid to late first round. If he drops any further, it's anybody's guess as to where he lands.

Where Will the Top Quarterbacks Go? (Or Where Should They Go?)

This year's draft has a crop of some really decent quarterbacks: Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, and Joe Burrow. It is held by many, and rightfully so, that Joe Burrow will go first overall. He has the talent, current skill, and upside to earn that distinction, and is therefore the easiest one to slot. I think Justin Herbert is a better quarterback than Tua, but I think Tagovailoa will be taken before him. I attribute that to people wanting to fight the stereotype that Tua is broken, and the fact that Herbert played in the PAC-12, a conference that doesn't get a lot of noise in the national scene. Tua will go before 10, and Herbert before 12. Now my hot take. I don't think anybody needs a quarterback bad enough to take Love before the first round, and therefore fall to round two somewhere.

What Prop Bets Would Drew Take?

While there is no sports right now, what can we bet on, how about NFL Draft prop bets?

Will Any Draftee Be Shown Drinking Beer (YES +250/NO -400)

I'll take the yes. People are sitting at home, and getting bored. Beer will be drunk.

Highest Number of People In The Same Room (OVER 9.5 people -160/UNDER 9.5 people +120)

I'd take the over. Most will be under due to social distancing, but this is a huge day for prospects, and will have a lot of a family around, I'll take the over.

Will Any Draftee Experience Technical Difficulties (YES-500/NO+225)

This is too hard to not take the yes. Odds are one draftee will have troubles for some reason.

Enjoy the draft this year, it's all we have for sports right now, so savour it.
