CFL Top Fives: Special Teamers

Writer: Drew HoferDrew Hofer

Updated: May 9, 2020

Drew is embarking on a series of Canadian Football League All-time Top Five lists. There's a trend of lists being written about what's the best and what's the worst, so let's who is the best and worst of major CFL position areas. Follow along for the next few weeks to see what Drew's take is on who are the greatest Canadian Football Leaguers of all time by position. And maybe Drew's friends will chime in on some of the groups

We're going to start with a position group that doesn't get shown a lot of love: The Special Teamers

5. Thiadric Hansen

Thiadric Hansen made this list for one reason. In the 2019 Grey Cup, Hansen made what could be labelled as the most incredible hit in football history, push a blocker of a kick return unit into the returner and forcing them both to the ground. If you’ve seen a better hit, change my mind.

4. Barron Miles

Barron Miles was a star corner in the league, but has made this list for one reason as well. Miles holds the CFL record for most blocked kicks in a CFL career, blocking 13 through the course of his CFL career with Montreal Alouettes and BC Lions.

3. Wade Miller

Wade Miller is currently the CEO of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the team he enjoyed his success, being a member of the club playing from 1995 through to 2005. He is third all-time on the special teams tackles list at 184, behind number 1 and 2 on this list.

2. Mike Miller

Mike Miller is a two time Grey Cup Champion with Edmonton in 2015, and Winnipeg in 2019. He is tied for the CFL record for special teams tackles in a single game at 7 in 2019, and was a useful option at fullback for offences, and was named the West Division nominee for the CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and was a West Division All-Star as the top non-Kicker in the West.

1. Jason Arakgi

Jason Aragki spent his entire career with the BC Lions from 2008-2017. He comes from a Canadian football lineage being the son of former CFL receiver Nick Arakgi. He played in almost every game of his career. I cannot recall that this outstanding special teamer missed a single game. The best quality in a special teamer in the CFL. He holds the CFL record for special teams tackles in a career, but that may not hold as number two on that list and this one is only 9 tackles behind him, but for now Arakgi is the best.

If you disagree with anybody on this list, tell Drew, he'd love to hear your take from you.

Stay tuned for the next list: All-time CFL kickers.
