It's time to see who Drew thinks were the best players to ever play the receiver position in Canadian football.
5. S.J. Green
S. J. Green is well on his way to a CFL career, if it isn’t done yet. He has been able to find success with two members of my Top 5 QB list: Calvillo and Ray. Green was seen as the reliable man in the core for both teams and solidified his reputation.
4. Nik Lewis
“Thick” Nik Lewis was a beast receiving over the middle and blocking. Nik Lewis was a force to be reckoned with, and not just for corners, but for middle linebackers too. Lewis came by his moniker honestly, as he was built like a tank, but had the hands of an angel. He caught everything, finishing his career with 1051 catches, a CFL record for a career, adding 13,778 receiving yards and 71 touchdowns, the yards being good enough for 5th all time.
3. Allen Pitts
Allen Pitts was regarded as the best receiver in Canadian Football History when he retired, but that didn’t last long (as you’ll soon find out). He holds the record for most receiving yards in a season at 2036 in 1994. Pitts was able to end his 11-year career with 2 rings and 14891 receiving yards, currently 3rd all-time, only trailing one and two on this list.
It should be noted, that the next two receivers on this list are the only slot backs in Canadian Football League history to be awarded the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award.
2. Geroy Simon
Number two on this list is number one in career receiving yards in Canadian Football History, Geroy Simon. Over the course of 15 seasons with Winnipeg, BC, and Saskatchewan, Simon was able to earn 3 Grey Cup rings as a player, a CFL MOP award in 2006, 6 ALL-CFL honours, and 7 CFL West All-star nods. This man was one of the best.
1. Milt Stegall
Number one is no doubt in some people’s minds, most of those being from Manitoba. Milton “Turtle Man, Stegall played 14 seasons in the CFL, all with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Stegall is a member of the Canadian Football and Winnipeg Blue Bomber Halls of Fame. Won the CFL MOP award in 2002. Now for his records: 2nd all-time in CFL receiving yards at 15,153, highest Yds/Rec in one season at 26.5 in 1997, 10 1000+ yard season, tied for 2nd all-time (only one behind Terry Vaughn), Most Touchdowns in a career at 147 (10 ahead of George Reed and Mike Pringle), most touchdowns in a single season at 23 in 2002. This man had longevity, style, and humility. He also has a street named after him that starts at the site of the old stadium.
This is Drew's list for the greatest players to catch the ball in the Canadian game, if you disagree, feel free to talk to him about it.
Come back again tomorrow when Drew takes a look at who are the best quarterbacks to have every played Canadian football.
